The FAMU Student Health Informatics and Information Management Association (SHIIMA) is the official campus organization representing health informatics and information management majors. Any student who has been accepted in the HIIM program is eligible for membership. This Association was created in 1982 by the first class of Medical Record Administration majors. The first President of the Association was Blaine Speights, an academic scholar who received his bachelors in 1984. The purpose of the SHIIMA is to provide service to the school, university, and profession; to promote the profession to the campus community and general public; to promote involvement in scholastic and professional aspects of the field of health informatics and information management; and, to provide the opportunity for fellowship among HIIM students. Originally founded as the “Student Medical Record Administration Association,” the SHIIMA and the Health Information professional career have evolved tremendously. Association members are graduating and moving up in the healthcare industry. The HIIM faculty and the SHIIMA body strongly encourage interested students to become involved in this Association to gain a powerful foundation for the Health Informatics and Information world to come.
