Animal Caregiver Intern (Unpaid)

Location: Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve, Montague, New Jersey

About Us: Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve is a haven for farmed animals who have endured abuse and neglect. Our mission is to provide our residents with a safe, loving environment where they can live out their lives with dignity and care. Beyond rescue, we are committed to fostering compassion and inspiring change through community outreach, educational programs, and advocacy efforts that promote a kinder, more sustainable world.

Located on 336 stunning acres in Northern New Jersey, our sanctuary is a place where visitors can connect with the animals, learn their stories, and understand the importance of protecting farmed animals and the environment. As a nonprofit organization, we are excited about the opportunities ahead to expand our impact, grow our programs, and collaborate with individuals and communities who share our vision for a better future for all living beings.

Position: Animal Caregiver Intern (unpaid)

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Animal Care Intern to support the care of our rescued animals. This unpaid internship offers hands-on experience in animal care. You will assist with feeding, cleaning habitats, performing basic animal care tasks, and supporting enrichment activities to ensure the well-being of the animals under our care.

Responsibilities:

  • Clean and enrich barns and habitats
  • Feed and care for animals
  • Assist with basic animal care and health checks
  • Clean hospital areas
  • Perform treatments for special care animals
  • Assist with farm errands, including vet trips
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Animal care experience (preferably at a sanctuary)
  • Strong communication and prioritization skills
  • Ability to follow care instructions and observe animal behavior
  • Creative problem-solving for individualized animal care
  • Compassionate and effective working with all personalities
  • Calm in medical emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions and lift at least 50 lbs
  • Reliable, dependable, and excellent record-keeping
  • Team player who follows directions well
  • Committed to our animal care policies
  • Passionate about animal welfare
  • Emotionally resilient in dealing with animals
