CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of the Director (OD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: This is a 1 year appointment for a fellow to receive:
- A supervised career development experience focused on advancing the science and practice of communicating about health equity. This will include on the job and formal training opportunities related to topics such as health disparities, social and structural determinants of health, communication product development, and message testing.
- Experience with a qualitative message testing and framing project that includes reviewing focus group and interview guides, submitting OMB and IRB packages, and identifying strategies to address challenges related to communicating about health equity.
- Training on communication dissemination tools (e.g., Adobe Campaign) and strategies (e.g., video, web, and digital).
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, there will be learning opportunities to:
- Assist with developing plans for message testing and framing of health equity communications.
- Participate in development of a series of whiteboard videos from concept, script review, and ideas for explaining complex health equity-related topics.
- Design and develop communication tools and materials such as newsletters, blogs, and social media content.
- Hone skills in data interpretation and application of interpretations to update messaging and framing strategy.
- Participate in skills development and networking opportunities through OMHHE and partner sponsored events.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed for up to five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the last five years.
