Location & Work Environment
- The NYSACHO office is located at 8 Airport Park Blvd, Latham, NY, 12110.
- The internship can be in-person, remote, or hybrid, with a preference for candidates who can occasionally visit the office.
- Travel opportunities may be available for visits to LHDs throughout New York State.
Internship Overview
The Workforce Development Intern will play a key role in supporting NYSACHO’s workforce development initiatives for local health departments (LHDs), with a primary focus on the association’s Enumeration of the Local Health Department Workforce Study. Conducted in partnership with the Region 2 Public Health Training Center, this study analyzes workforce trends to inform advocacy efforts, technical assistance, and workforce planning for LHDs across New York State.
In addition, the intern will contribute to NYSACHO’s Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Accreditation Workgroup, assisting LHDs in their accreditation efforts by supporting research, meeting coordination, and resource development.
Beyond these core projects, the intern will have opportunities to engage with a variety of NYSACHO’s public health initiatives, including immunization, harm reduction, climate change, environmental health, and broader public health efforts.
This role will provide hands-on experience in public health research, workforce development, and accreditation support, with the potential for travel to LHDs across New York State for shadowing experiences and short-term projects.
The intern will report to NYSACHO’s Associate Program Director, Workforce Development (who oversees the Public Health Infrastructure Grant) and will receive regular guidance, feedback, and mentorship.
Key Responsibilities May Include…
1. Data Analysis & Reporting
- Assist with analyzing and interpreting data from the enumeration surveys, identifying workforce trends and challenges.
- Develop data visualizations and summaries for reports and presentations.
- Contribute to drafting, editing, and formatting research reports.
2. Training & Resource Development
- Assist in the planning and organization of webinars and trainings based on workforce needs identified in surveys.
- Develop user-friendly toolkits to help LHDs enhance workforce capacity and capabilities.
3. PHAB Accreditation Workgroup Support
- Support meeting preparation, research, and documentation for the PHAB Accreditation Workgroup.
- Maintain the Accreditation Workgroup webpage, ensuring meeting notes and resources are up to date.
- Conduct background research on accreditation standards and best practices.
4. Local Health Department Support & Field Experience
- Travel to LHDs across New York State for shadowing opportunities and on-site projects.
- Observe public health professionals to gain a deeper understanding of LHD operations and workforce roles.
- Assist with short-term projects within LHDs as needed.
5. General Support
- Work with NYSACHO staff to assist with the completion of administrative tasks related to trainings as needed which may include managing registration, creating agendas, printing materials, etc.
- Perform other duties as required, to support public health initiatives.
Internship Goals
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
- Gain hands-on experience in public health workforce development and accreditation processes.
- Contribute to data-driven workforce planning and resource development for LHDs.
- Build professional skills through real-world public health projects and networking opportunities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in public health, biology, chemistry, nursing, social sciences, or a related field.
- Strong analytical skills, with experience in data analysis and interpretation preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Interest in public health workforce development.
- Valid driver’s license (preferred for travel opportunities).
