Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice (FC) works with law students, alumni, and a broad range of partners to support and expand social justice in New York City. Since 2008, FC has been a leader in efforts to enhance and expand economic justice with a focus on consumer debt issues for low-income and economically-distressed New Yorkers. FC runs the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island CLARO Programs, which provide limited-scope legal assistance to unrepresented low-income consumers on consumer debt (including debts from credit cards, medical debt, car loans, rent arrears), identity theft, and credit reporting issues. These NYC CLARO clinics are court-based, offered weekly and semi-monthly, and are staffed by volunteer attorneys and supported by volunteer college and law students and other volunteers. With the onset of the pandemic, the FC is building a remote component to its CLARO Programs, which is currently serving consumers in a pilot phase that it expects will continue even after in-person clinics resume. As the VISTA, you will be involved in continuing to build Remote CLARO and in recruiting, training, and supporting attorneys and other volunteers involved in CLARO clinics. You will help plan all aspects of Remote Clinics and in-person clinics once they resume. This position is a part of an 11-member VISTA cadre at FC and partner sites. In addition to the camaraderie and network the team brings, you will also have weekly check-ins and program meetings with senior staff, monthly professional development workshops led or organized by the VISTA Leader, and opportunities to attend NYC networking and training events. This is an ideal position for someone interested in pursuing careers in economics, public policy, urban studies, or law, especially public interest law.
Member Duties : As a Remote CLARO Program Coordinator you will aim to expand economic justice in NYC through support of remote (and in time in-person) consumer legal services programs. You will work closely with Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice Executive and Deputy Directors to build the Remote CLARO Program and to recruit, train, and support attorney, student, and other volunteers. You will help improve data collection/tracking through technology; and develop innovative ways to solicit feedback from volunteers, clients, and partners. As a member of our team, You will have an opportunity to interact with attorneys, law students, and members of the communities we serve. Ideal candidates for this position will be committed to justice; be able to take direction and work independently; and enjoy working with a diverse set of individuals, communities, and volunteers. The work of this VISTA Project is especially urgent given the economic impact of COVID on low-income communities.
