The internship:

Summer interns make a four and a half month commitment from May 15th through September 30th, working primarily for the BOEC Wilderness Program. The summer begins with three weeks of intense training. During this time, interns learn their role within the BOEC and get a chance to develop the hard and soft skills necessary to work at the BOEC. Throughout the summer, interns get hands on experience in all aspects of programming and become staff on Wilderness courses. the responsibilities include planning, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating the courses that they are a part of. Courses can range from one to fourteen days. They may be held at our Wilderness site or in a mobile format (camping, canoeing, or rafting trips off the BOEC site). Interns play a role in planning the menu, pulling gear/equipment, facilitating the different programming areas (high ropes course, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, climbing, adaptive cycling, and other outdoor adventures), and evaluating the course. The amount of responsibility given to the interns depends on what each individual proves he or she can handle. Along with working Wilderness courses, interns are provided with the opportunity to work with the Operations Manager and other Administrative staff. The summer internship allows for interns to gain experience working in outdoor/experiential education, recreation management, therapeutic recreation, and working with people with disabilities, as well as a chance to take advantage of Colorado’s summer experience.

Requirements:

All interns must be twenty-one years of age, have current First Aid and CPR certifications, health insurance coverage, and the ability to commit to the entire season. Above all, the BOEC is looking to create an intern staff that is self-motivated, takes initiative, experience in our programming areas, and some experience working with people with disabilities and special needs. All interns must have a strong sense of hard work, flexibility, a love of the outdoors, an open mind, and a love for working with people.
